FAQ

Do I need an international license to drive in Peru?

No, according to Peruvian law you can drive with the driver's license of your country of origin for up to 6 months from your entry into the country. But it must be considered that when entering the country a Migration agent can restrict your maximum stay in Peru for a period of less than said 6 months, if so, the maximum validity time of the license from your country of origin is equivalent to the maximum stay time assigned by the Migration agent.

Can I travel outside of Lima with the rented car?

There are a few small exceptions but yes you can. By renting a car or SUV from Budget, you become the temporary owner of the vehicle and can travel freely. Of course, if you are going to travel to an area where the road is not paved, then you must rent a 4x4 truck.

Important: vehicles of Groups M / A (Kia Picanto) are only for use within Lima City since these vehicles have a small engine not recommended for road trips.

Can I leave Peru with the car I rented from Budget?

Unfortunately it is not possible to travel outside of Peru with a rented car.

Do I have to pay IGV (sales tax) when I rent a car in Peru If I am a foreigner?

Yes, even if you are a foreigner tourist you have to pay IGV (sales tax) when renting a car in Peru.

Do I have to give or present something in guarantee for the rented car?

You don’t need to give anything , however we do consult the brand of your credit card (Visa, MasterCard, etc.) for an amount which varies according to the vehicle you are interested in rent. This amount is retained as a hold (is not a charge) and at the time of the vehicle return we ask them to release it.

Which are the guarantee hold amounts requested over my credit card?

For the updated chart, please see the Guarantee section at the Terms & Conditions page.

Can I give you my brand new car so you can rent it?

Thank you for your interest in Budget, however we work only with our own fleet.

Can I return the rented vehicle in another city (Drop-off Service)?

You can return your vehicle in another city like Arequipa or Cusco if required. The Drop-off Service must be coordinated and accepted in advance, please contact a customer service representative to know the drop-off fee and to confirm the availability.

Which are the rental requirements?

To rent a car you will need:

  • To be at least 21 years old.
  • Passport or Peruvian Foreign Resident Card.
  • A valid driver license with at least 1 year since issued.
  • A valid Credit Card to guarantee the rental.

When I go to the Vehicles section, the prices I see are not the same as when I want to make my reservation. Why?

The "Vehicles" section is not including variables such as location and pick-up date, so it only shows the cheapest car rental price that the system has found for the following days. When proceeding to make a booking, the selection of location and pick-up date may be generating a differentiated rate according to supply and demand for that date.

I am a tourist, what should I consider in case a police officer stops me?

When you rent a car in Budget Peru, you must have the guarantee that both you and the rented vehicle meet all the requirements to drive it in Peru and therefore there is no reason for a police officer to stop you for an alleged infraction. If a police officer stops you, present your documents and those of the vehicle and consider the following:

  • If you have committed a traffic violation such as speeding or parking in an improper place, simply receive the fine and send a copy to your rental office so that they can suggest payment options.
  • Do not make any payment directly to the police. The police in Peru are not authorized to carry out any type of collection.
  • If the police officer insists that you must pay him/her directly for an alleged infraction, try as much as possible to contact us to help you.
  • If you do not have a way to contact us, ask to go to the police station: if there is no real fault, the police will give up and let you go.

How much mileage (kilometers) can I travel with the rented car?

Unless another value is indicated in your reservation, reservations at bugetperu.com grant 260 free kilometers per day (about 161 miles), which is usually more than enough for almost all trips. If you consider that you may exceed the total free mileage provided in your rental, you could choose to hire the Unlimited Mileage option.

The Unlimited Mileage option can be selected in step 3 of your reservation. This service is not available with Groups M and A (Kia Picanto or similar).

The current value of the extra kilometer can be seen in step 4 of your reservation, just below the image of the selected vehicle.

What type of fuel do your vehicles use?

All cars and SUVs that are for rent in Budget Peru use gasoline. In the case of pick-ups trucks, the fuel they use is diesel.

We do not have gas vehicles, either CNG or LPG, since the idea is that our vehicles can be used to travel throughout the country (if their use is allowed) and unfortunately not all travel routes offer the same level of service stations as there are with common fuels such as gasoline or diesel.

Can my pet (dog, cat) travel with me in my rented car?

The best trips are with the family and pets are part of the family. At Budget Peru we are Pet Friendly, so your dog, cat, parrot, hamster, etc. can travel with you in the car or SUV you decided to rent. Of course, please consider: the car you rent will be later assigned to another client, so we ask you to take the necessary measures so that the vehicle is returned in good condition, and do not generate delays or cleaning fees for returning the vehicle excessively dirty.

Is insurance / coverage / protection mandatory?

First of all, the correct terms are protection or coverage; and in our case, the protections are not mandatory, they are optional and although they are recommended, it is the client's decision to contract them or not.
